Autism Assessment (ADOS-2)

The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a standardized, play-based assessment that helps clinicians evaluate social interaction, communication, play, and repetitive behaviors—key areas affected in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). At On Track Pediatric Therapy, we use the ADOS-2 with children and adolescents from 12 months to 18 years of age. The assessment includes different modules tailored to a child’s age and language abilities, ensuring an individualized and accurate evaluation.

3 Easy Steps to ASD Diagnosis

Our Evaluation Process

  • Every autism assessment begins with a full speech and language evaluation.
  • This step helps us understand your child’s communication abilities across several areas, including:
    • Expressive Language – how your child uses words, phrases, and sentences to communicate.
    • Receptive Language – how your child understands and follows directions, questions, and stories.
    • Articulation & Speech Clarity – how well your child’s speech can be understood by others.
    • Social/Pragmatic Skills – how your child uses communication in social settings, such as making eye contact, taking turns in conversation, responding to others, and understanding nonverbal cues.
    • Play & Functional Communication – how your child uses play, gestures, or other strategies to express needs and ideas.
  • The results of this evaluation give us a foundation for interpreting the ADOS-2 and ensure we have a complete picture of your child’s strengths and challenges.
  • The ADOS-2 is a structured, play-based tool designed to observe behaviors that are often associated with autism.
  • During the session, the clinician uses games, toys, and social activities to see how your child communicates, interacts, plays, and responds.
  • The assessment covers key areas such as eye contact, gestures, facial expressions, pretend play, conversation, and repetitive behaviors.
  • The ADOS-2 is considered one of the most reliable and valid tools for identifying Autism Spectrum Disorder and is used worldwide in both clinical and research settings.
  • Our licensed Speech-Language Pathologists are certified to administer and interpret the ADOS-2, ensuring accurate and thorough results.
  • Following the evaluations, our clinician will compile all findings into a comprehensive diagnostic report.
  • If the results support a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, this will be clearly documented along with recommendations for therapy, school supports, and community resources.
  • We then collaborate with your child’s primary care physician (PCP) or pediatrician to review and sign off on the evaluation so that the diagnosis becomes part of your child’s official medical record.
  • This collaboration helps ensure continuity of care, allows insurance providers to recognize the diagnosis, and provides a foundation for accessing services such as ABA therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and school-based supports.
